Cult Work!
Hokusai's Manga (1760-1849) is an irreplaceable key to understanding his multifaceted art. With over 4,000 drawings fully reproduced here, all commented on, this book offers an unparalleled visual encyclopedia of Japan at the beginning of the 19th century, from its nature to its human activities, beliefs, and imagination. An unrivaled tableau brought to life by Hokusai’s virtuoso, precise, and playful lines.
This luxurious edition in two volumes comes in a boxed set and reproduces the entirety of the 15 volumes of the Manga, including three published posthumously. The three-tone reproduction, faithful to the original, is commented on from an anthropological, artistic, and cultural perspective, plate by plate, by Matthi Forrer, a Hokusai specialist.
The case provides a true showcase for the two books. It features a reproduction of Hokusai’s work “Tigre qui court, Hashiru tora” with an orange canvas at the head and foot of the box. The title and the drawing on the back "Self-portrait at the age of eighty-three by Katsushika Hokusai" are reproduced in metallic orange gilding. The same drawing in gilding is featured on the cover of each volume.
A precious book, both in substance and form.
