In hopes of counteracting a decline in sales at Marvel in the early 1960s, comic veterans Stan Lee and Jack Kirby came up with the idea of creating a super team. Kirby, convinced that superheroes would experience a resurgence after 15 years of being overshadowed by romance, horror, and war stories, deemed the initiative clever. As for Lee, he was delighted to finally be able to "write the kind of story [he would] like to read." The Fantastic Four changed their lives, their careers, and the face of comics.
Some of the most iconic milestones in Marvel's history are gathered here, starting with the first: Reed Richards, his girlfriend Sue Storm, one’s best friend Ben Grimm, and the other's little brother Johnny Storm crash-land on Earth after their rocket is hit by cosmic rays. They then discover that they have become Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch, respectively. These are characters with complex emotions, who sometimes see their powers as a burden rather than a blessing. Their story unfolds in New York and not in a fictional substitute city, and the Four frequently encounter other Marvel heroes. The panels are dynamic, and the writing is natural and easy to read. Lee and Kirby were the Lennon and McCartney of comics. It's not always clear where the talent of one ends and that of the other begins, but together, they were worth at least three.
This XXL volume compiles the first 20 issues reproduced from the best-preserved original comics, which were unstapled and photographed in close collaboration with Marvel and the Certified Guaranty Company.
