Plus d’Infos

From the late 18th century, as Japanese society experienced an unprecedented economic boom, art and fashion became highly popular. Clothing became a true fashion phenomenon, serving as a sign of social status and wealth. Widely distributed, the ukiyo-e print ("image of the floating world"), which focuses on depicting everyday pleasures, echoes this new interest in appearance. It played an important role as both a promotional tool for fashion models and a source of inspiration for design workshops.

In a display of elegance and even extravagance, samurai, kabuki actors, geisha, and courtesans lent their silhouettes to showcase sumptuous outfits. Kimono, obi, furisode, haori, or kakimiso, carefully enhanced with a plethora of accessories (shoes, combs, hairpins), demonstrate the extreme sophistication of the attire. The plates reproduced in this book illustrate the various techniques used to magnify these dazzling garments: shibori (fabric tied or sewn before being dyed), kaki-e (direct painting on the fabric), and katazome (stencil-applied design).

Artists thus created a repertoire of outfits with vibrant colors, combining the harmony of lines with the delicacy of patterns. Drawn from the rich collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, over 200 prints by the great masters of the genre (Utamaro, Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, and Keisai Eisen ...) bear witness to the flamboyance and refinement of this dazzling fashion culture at the end of the Edo period.
